Attention Local Government Workers

On 19 November 2009 the Executive of the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA) made a decision to close your Local Super Defined Benefit Scheme "as soon as practicable and with immediate effect". This decision will potentially impact your livelihood and the livelihood of future Local Government workers.

This decision was made despite correspondence to the Executive from the Australian Services Union and the Australian Workers Union as follows:

"Dear LGA Executive Member

We write in relation to the Local Super Defined Benefits Scheme and current discussions and recent presentations by Local Super in relation to the future of the Scheme.

We understand that your Executive will soon make a decision in relation to the Scheme. As key stakeholders and representatives of thousands of workers in Local Government, it is imperative that the following points be carefully considered and taken into account when the future of the Scheme is discussed by your Executive.

Firstly, it is our understanding that little (if any) consultation has occurred with members of the Scheme in relation to its future.

Secondly, based on our understanding of the current and future viability of Local Super, keeping the Defined Benefits Scheme open and reviewing its future viability in two (2) years is our preferred option.

Thirdly, closure of the Defined Benefits Scheme should only be made after existing staff in Local Government have been given information about the Scheme, its impending closure and a final and genuine opportunity to join the Defined Benefits Scheme.

We ask that the matters above be given serious consideration. We are happy to speak further with you about them and look forward to your response to the above."

Local Government workers have expressed grave concerns in relation to this decision. It is urgent that workers in Local Government voice their concerns to members of the LGA Executive and ask them to reconsider their decision. There is nothing stopping the Executive or Local Super from re-opening this issue.

What can you do?

  • Send an email voicing your concerns to all members of the LGA Executive. Click Here to send your email to the LGA Executive with a copy to Local Super. (Please note: This link works for Outlook Express, and may work for some other email programmes - if you have difficulty using this feature or the body text does not appear in your email - please contact Jude at jprice@asu-sant.asn.au and we will supply the details directly).

You are able to change the text of this draft email in order to personalise it and you are also able to see who the members of the Local Government Executive are - if the Mayor of your Council is a member of the LGA Executive you may wish to send her or him a direct message.

  • Send a link to this page to other workers in Local Government and ask them to forward an email to the LGA Executive too.
  • Working together and collectively voicing our opinion is the way we will get the LGA Executive to reconsider.
  • Ask your colleagues to get behind this collective activity and support each other by joining their Union.
  • Contact your Union office for more information.
