ASU LOCAL GOVERNMENT - Your Rights at Work Are Under Threat

16 February 2006

Your Workplace Rights are under threat. Come along and hear new information about the changes and your role and get involved in the fight to save workplace rights

Many of you would be aware that the Federal Government has control of the Senate and has just implemented its first wave of new Industrial Relations legislation.

The legislation will affect Local Government workers; it includes:

  • Removal of employment conditions from Awards and the reduction of the safety net
  • Lowering of minimum wages
  • Removal of unfair dismissal protection for the majority of Australian workers
  • Making bargaining harder and keeping Union Organisers out of your workplace
  • Reducing the power of the independent Industrial
  • Relations Commission to settle disputes and set fair minimum standards at work
  • Promoting secret individual contracts and tying funding to organisations compulsorily offering individual contracts to workers

Your Union the ASU is playing a key role in the ACTU's campaign to save workplace rights .... but a massive effort by all Union members is required to fend off some of the worst proposals and organise in your workplace and in Local Government to secure your rights at work.

The ASU Office is providing Local Government specific education to all WPRs and activists to ensure you have crucial information about your role as a WPR or active member in the new environment and how we are going to fight for our rights at work in Local Government in the coming months.
