17 September 2010 Year of Women in Local GovernmentAdvanced Notice: A state wide conference Friday 17 September
About the Year of Women in Local Government 2010Within the Local Government sector in the last five years there has been no shortage of activity designed to promote the participation of women into executive and elected leadership positions. Yet the latest reviews have revealed that even against the backdrop of this activity, women still account for less than 30 % of councillors, 20% senior managers and only 5% of CEO's in local government. In order for local government to strengthen policy debate and ensure local decision making is representative of the communities it supports, it needs to ensure that both management and elected representatives reflect the gender balance and diversity found within their communities. The Year of Women in Local Government 2010 is a key platform to raise awareness of the benefits and opportunities for local government across Australia, through increasing women's participation at both an elected and managerial level. The Year of Women in Local Government 2010 will work to create an environment that will enable women to have the opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to the sector. In South Australia, the Local Government Association of SA (LGA SA), Local Government Managers Australia SA (LGMA SA), Office for State/Local Government Relations (OSLGR), Australian Local Government Women's Association SA(ALGWA SA), and your Union the Australian Services Union are working together to deliver a range of activities focusing on women in local government, throughout 2010. A state wide conference, scheduled for Friday September 17th at the newly refurbished Adelaide Entertainment Centre. (Please see flyer attached)... Full details and information coming soon.
